Week 8: 10/14-10/18

Hello everyone!

Even though it’s been a short week, we have still been hard at work.

A lot of our time has been spent working on our ongoing projects. We have finally finished our Ellis Island posters! The class is so excited to teach each other about the stops that they researched. They are even more excited to use these posters for reference next week when we act out what the immigrants did as they went through Ellis Island.

We have also continued working on our Ashes of Roses scripts. We have been focusing on the difference between first and third person narration, and how to change one to the other. Since the book is written in first person, but we decided we wanted our play to have third person narrators, we are getting a lot of practice with how to change the perspective. In two weeks we will be giving Mr. Chris’s class a preview of our play to show them what we have so far and receive constructive feedback. We are so excited to show them what we have been doing!

In math, we have continued our work with the order of operations. The class is getting more and more used to solving problems with multiple steps. They are becoming so much more confident in identifying what part of the problem to start with and explaining why.  For Mindset Math, we are focusing on multiplication- specifically factors. The images that we sorted last week became the basis for a game. Each of the images represented a factor, and the students had to figure out what number that factor was part of. The class did a great job connecting our visuals to our multiplication chart to really get a sense of how factors make up various numbers. In addition to this, we have continued working on using geometry in art. The students reviewed how to make circles using a compass, and used them to make beautiful designs!

On Wednesday I was out for professional development. In my absence, the class did work in their Super Science magazine. They read an article about how lionfish are damaging East Coast ecosystems. They identified the problems that they cause and how people are trying to help. This article also introduced to the idea of an invasive species and the dangerous effects that they can have. They analyzed the number of invasive species in various countries and created a bar graph to represent the data.

Looking ahead: As usual, Monday we will go to the library and Friday we will go to the bank. Please remember to send students with no more than $10. Tuesday, November 12th will be our field trip to see Earth to Kenzie.

Have an excellent weekend! I look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday!
